It is rumored that Sony is developing a 100 MP smartphone camera sensor. As SamMobile (via Weibo) reports, Sony is the latest company to introduce a 100MP sensor. In addition, Sony does not wish to sit on the sidelines while Samsung dominates the market. Sony’s IMX8 series is said to be the source of the 100MP sensor mentioned in the report.

The sensor will also be used on mid-range and upper-midrange smartphones. Sony’s next sensor has yet to be announced. It may, however, be larger than the usual 1/2-inch 64 MP camera. Sony has not yet specified whether it intends to use this new sensor in one of its upcoming smartphones or to sell it to third parties. The Sony phone with a 1.1-inch sensor size was reported to be coming out a few months ago.

Although companies are flexing their muscles in the race for megapixels, no real phone has yet to unveil its ambitious sensors. No smartphone has yet featured the first generation of Samsung’s 200MP camera sensor. However, the second generation of HP1 200MP ISOCELL camera sensors is in development. Samsung’s Galaxy S23 Ultra is reportedly the first smartphone with a 200MP sensor. A 200MP ISOCELL HP1 sensor is also said to be included in the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra.

Megapixels have reached a whole new level. As many companies as possible are increasing the number of megapixels in their sensors. Having a higher megapixel count doesn’t guarantee better quality (Pixel phones are a great example of this), but it’s a great indicator of a manufacturer’s capabilities.

Sony is planning to release a 100MP camera sensor to add fuel to the fire of competition with Samsung, according to a report. Samsung released a 108MP camera sensor three years ago, which caused a great deal of buzz for Galaxy phones at the time. Korean manufacturer Samsung introduced a 200MP camera sensor earlier this year to stand out from the crowd.
